POEM
BUDDIES
Generations of bigotry
Racist claws ensnarl
Those infectious thoughts
Rooted deeply in the soil
Weeds of hate sprout
No flowers blooming
In friendships that restore
Unless in a child
Where buddies do get formed
By simply being around
In everyday play
Little more than a glance begins
The happenstance of chance
Where risks don’t exist
From the color of a buddy’s skin
They should be everywhere
Yet, these buddies hardly anywhere
When knee high to a grasshopper
In everyday play
By simply being around
